The LG Wing is probably one of the most unique devices we've seen all year...or maybe even of all time. It's one of those devices that, well, blazes its own trail without really stopping to ask for directions. And I'm all for it. This is a pre-production unit sent to me by LG – so it's not a retail unit.

The durability test has to wait until that comes out like we always do. But the hardware is finalized so we can take it all apart and see how it works. Rather brave of them since I've never opened up a phone like this before. And there's a pretty good chance it won't survive. Let's get started.


The LG Wing has about the same size, shape, thickness, and weight as my Note 10 Plus inside of its case. But the LG Wing can do this...which is something I never thought a phone would need to do. Instead of folding, this guy swivels. It'll be super interesting to see how that works from the inside. The phone splits in half, swiveling up into at-shape so the screen is horizontal while revealing a secondary square screen down below. The swinging motion feels solid and really easy to initiate. And something catches the screen at the top of the swivel to gently ease it into place. We're going to find out how the hinge works once we get inside.

LG has installed a high lubricity polyacetal which is a lubricated plastic of sorts that surrounds the front panel and protects the screen. It's a softer, smoother plastic raised up to form a slight cavern inside so foreign materials won't be rubbing up on the screen when it's closed or opening. This is important because pocket sand is a real danger to glass displays.


When the phone is opened up in its winged state, there's more real estate for activities and multitasking. Like with YouTube, it displays the video up top and the video controls down below. Or when we're in the camera app the bottom display can act as a gimbal for the camera unit adding extra electronic stabilization to the camera. There is no physical movement of the camera hardware while you're controlling that gimbal. It's all done with software, but still pretty cool.

Activating the top camera makes it pop out of the phone like a daisy, and then the Wing can film forwards and backward at the same time. It also has the same retract and fall protection features that we've seen in other pop-up cameras. The coolest thing though, I think, is the ability to watch a video full screen while another app like texting is open at the bottom. Or even the ability to comment on a video while it's still full screen. Or maybe while you're on a road trip, navigation can be vertical while the music is over on the side screens. There are a lot of different options. I mean, let's be honest, this probably isn't going to be the best phone to recommend to grandma. But if you're looking for the latest, craziest, and most uniquely designed phone on the market, this might just very well be it.


So, keep in mind that this is my first time seeing the LG Wing and it is very different from any other phone we've taken apart recently. So, cross your fingers for our new friend's survival. The LG Wing has passed 9 different mil standards which dropped the Wing at 26 different angles from 1.2 meters and it still survived. But that's obviously quite a bit different than being completely dismantled. I'll remove the back-glass panel since that's where I'd assume, we'd find the screen and internal connectors, along with whatever magic makes up that swivel hinge.

With the back glass gone, we get our first look at the wireless charging pad, and the no dogs allowed stickers which is good. Since I'm not a canine I'll continue. There are the top plastics. And once that panel is removed, we get our first tease at how LG has assembled the Wing. We know ribbon cables can flex, you know, from those pop-up cameras. And this ribbon cable controlling the screen goes through the PCB and rotates gently with the display inside of its large, smooth, circular opening.


LG says they've tested this opening motion over 200,000 times. Which, like if you flipped open the phone 100 times a day would still last you about 5 ½ years. So far, so good. We can also get a close up look at the pop-up front-facing camera. It's got the same stepper motor setup that we've seen other pop-up cameras use. I used to dedicate an entire video to a pop-up camera, but now we've got whole phones splitting in half. Technology is pretty great.


I'll disconnect the battery, the bottom screen, the USB-C charging port cable, all just like little Legos. Then I'll pull out the SIM and expandable memory SD card tray. You might think that a phone like this wouldn't have any water protection, and your kind of right. The phone isn't exactly sealed shut. But LG has coated the internal boards with a water repellent coating. There's still no official IP rating, so keep it away from water, but it is nice to know it does have some protection.


I'll lift the motherboard out from the phone after disconnecting the 32-megapixel front-facing camera. There are 3 rear-facing cameras. The main camera, which does have optical image stabilization, and a 13-megapixel wide-angle camera down at the bottom. The top camera does the whole gimbal thing that I showed you earlier, with its built-in electronic stabilization. There is a small thermal pad on the back which helps transfer heat away from the processor into the frame of the phone.

I'll take the battery out next before we try to remove the wing. There is an incredibly reasonable amount of adhesive holding the battery down. No magic pull tabs. But it does pop up easily with my pry tool. Thumbs up for that. It has a 4,000-milliamp-hour capacity. We have a few more revelations about that hinge from this vantage point. The little doohickey that cushions the hinge opening is right here next to the display ribbon. It's the smallest hydraulic damper I've ever seen. Hydraulic shocks are common on trucks and off-roading vehicles to help cushion the impact of the vehicle while off-roading. And here we have the babies of the baby sharks inside of the LG Wing. If we can get an “awe” down in the comments that would be great. We'll get a closer look at that guy in just a second. In order to get the front screen off, I imagine it has something to do with these 6 large Phillips head screws. After those are gone, I can tell the screen wants to come away from the phone but it's still connected somehow. I'm trying to be gentle since I never really asked LG if they wanted this phone back alive or not. But they also didn't tell me how to open it, so here we are.


After a lot of unfruitful jiggling and wiggling, I realized that the screen itself had a little hole in its sliding mechanism. Kind of like how we would find in a hotel room chain door lock. And once I got those internal screws removed, it gets loose enough so the hole can be lined up and popped off the body of the phone. There are 9 black screws holding the hinge to the super-thin top display. And once those are gone, we finally get our full complete view of the LG Wing hinge. The rest of the hinge components are riveted together which makes sense because what's left inside are two pretty powerful springs. One that helps the phone open and holds it open. And the other that holds it in a closed position. Both equally balanced so that the swiveling motion itself is easy. The large hole in the center is for that ribbon cables. 


The two curved sections you see on the hinge are for the double locking mechanism that keeps the screen from opening too far in either direction. And having two of them both made out of metal helps keep the screen strongly positioned parallel to the rest of the phone body. It looks like our itty-bitty hydraulic damper is held in place with three tiny screws of its own. I'll pop those out and pull away from our tic-tac size little friend. It's amazing how small this thing is. The same technology that keeps the screen door from slamming shut is now inside of a cell phone. 2020 has been pretty wild.


Speaking of wild, it's going to be really crazy if I can get this whole thing put back together and functioning again. I'll feed the top display through the hinge and get that screwed down. The top display is 6.8 inches, and the bottom display, which is still attached to the frame, is just about the slot in the screen lined up with the metal post on the phone body is probably the trickiest part of the reassembly. But once I feel it gets clicked in, everything else just falls into place exactly how it should. And I can attach the spring portion of the swivel hinge back to the frame from the inside. Everything else is relatively normal just like a regular phone.


The motherboard goes back in with its popup camera. And all of the little Lego-style ribbon attachments get clipped in. I'll lay the battery in place and get the Wing screen ribbon connected. Then I can attach the wireless charging and protective back plastics with the screws. And trust me, I'm just as surprised as you are. The whole thing still turns on and functions like normal. Not too shabby. I'm impressed at LG's leap of innovation. The Wing brings some exciting diversity to an otherwise rather boring sea of rectangles, and I think it's pretty cool. Hey, guys here is the DramaJoJo website of mobile review. So, as we saw, there are four new iPhones this year. We were expecting three, the successors to last year’s iPhones. But this year we also have a very small iPhone 12 Mini. There's an iPhone 12, an iPhone 12 Pro, as well as an iPhone 12 Pro Max. Now, this is great that we have so many options but it also might make that decision even more confusing for you, of which one to go for. But hey, don't worry. That's what I'm here for, that’s what DramaJoJo's here for. I'm going to descriptions for you need to know. And hopefully, by the end of this topic, you'll know which one to go for.

  • Screen Displays Look


Right, so initially, let’s look at the displays. The bezels have now become smaller compared to what we had last year. So, you are getting a higher screen-to-body ratio. We still have that notch. And no, there is no 120 Hertz display, like some rumors were suggesting earlier on. They are 60 Hertz displays, but we do have some significant improvements, especially for the iPhone 12as well as the iPhone 12 Mini. All displays now OLED displays. Gone is LCD. And they all also have a high resolution. So, we're looking at around460 to 470 PPI pixel density. That just means details are going to be very sharp. 


  • Compares Screen Displays


Now take a deeper look into this. It does look like the iPhone12 Pro and the 12 Pro Max do have slightly brighter displays. The peak brightness is 800 nits, and then all of them go up to 1200 nits when you are viewing HDR content. But when you are viewing regular content, the iPhone 12 and the 12 Mini will only be able to go up to 625 nits. So just a small detail that I did notice there. And of course, we've got the differences in the sizes of the displays. So, we do have a 5.4-inch display on the Mini. And then on the 12 and the 12 Pro, the displays are actually exactly the same size around 6.1 inches. And the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the largest, at around 6.7 inches. Now you might be thinking that, okay, these devices are going to be quite big because of the larger screen sizes. However, Apple has said that because of the smaller bezel sizes, the devices are generally around the same size. In fact, the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro are exactly the same sizes in terms of dimensions. And the iPhone 12 Pro is a similar size to the iPhone 11 Pro last year. And the iPhone 12 is actually a lot smaller, lighter than the iPhone 11 that we had last year. Now, although the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro are roughly about the same size, the iPhone 12 Pro does weigh more. And that is because you have a stainless-steel frame for the Pro and the Max. And on the Mini as well as on the 12, you do have an aluminum frame. However, when it comes to the glass, we actually have the same glass across the board. This is what Apple called the ceramic shield glass. And, from what Apple is claiming this is the toughest glass on any smartphone out right now. And it improves drop performance by up to four times. Now, I'm not going to be somebody who's going to be testing this out with drop tests. But from what we're seeing, this looks very impressive. 


  • Colors View


For the colors, the 12 and the 12 Mini come in black, white, a Product Red, a green, and a blue, and for the Pro and Pro Max, we've got silver, graphite, gold, as well as a Pacific blue, which I am really liking the look of. 


  • Waterproof 


All devices or also IP68water and dust resistant. But they actually much more resistant to water compared to other devices. Generally, most smartphones out there, have about a two-meter rating underwater. But the new iPhones can go up to six meters underwater, which is also very impressive.


  • Network Features


Now the iPhone 12 Mini is very small. It's actually smaller compared to the iPhone SE, and it only weighs around 133 grams, which is very light. And this makes it the smallest, lightest, and thinnest 5G smartphone in the world. And that brings us to the next part. Yes, all of these devices do support 5G technology. So, Apple is now joining the 5G race. If you are in a 5G enabled area you'll be able to take advantage of very fast speeds. And the more 5G rolls out across the coming months, the more you'll be able to take advantage of those very high speeds. And speaking of speed, they are powered by the Apple A14 Bionic chip. Now, Apple is claiming that this is the fastest chip on any smartphone. It is the world's first chipset that is based on a five-nanometer process. I'm not going to go into too many technical details. But essentially, these things are going to be super fast. And, on the Android side of things, it is going to get very competitive because the A14, from what we'reseen, is a powerhouse. 


  • Camera Summary


Now let's move on to the cameras where there are lots of little differences and I'm going to try to summarize them in the best way that I can. So the iPhone 12 and the 12 Mini have exactly the same cameras. We've got a dual 12megapixel camera setup. So we're looking at a primary camera with a wider f/1.6 aperture. So you are going to be able to let in more light. This should improve low light photography. And then you of course have the ultra-wide camera. The new thing this year, however, is that you can use night mode across the primary, the ultra-white as well as the selfie camera, which is quite interesting. And this was something that I did feedback on, on the iPhone 11s, not having night mode in the ultra-wide camera, did mean that was really not that useful when you wanted to capture low light scenes with the ultra-wide. So it's great to see Apple has now bought this for the iPhone 12s.

 


Now the iPhone 12 Pro and the 12 Pro Max. So, we've got triple-camera setups, but they are actually quite different. All 12 megapixels, the primary camera again, F 1.6 aperture, but the Pro Max does have a larger sized sensor. So you're going to be able to capture more light on the Pro Max which is going to give you better low light performance. Not only that, but the Pro Max also has sensor-shift optical image stabilization. So generally, for stabilization on a smartphone, the lens is what's going to be moving to compensate for any shake. But on the 12 Pro Max, the sensor is actually going to be shaking, which should give you improved stabilization for images and video, and I can not wait to test this out.

Now, both devices also of course have an ultra-wide camera. And then we have a telephoto camera. Now, again, there is a difference with the telephoto cameras. The iPhone 12 Pro has a two-timed optical zoom. The 12 Pro Max has two and a half times optical zoom. So Apple is not going for the crazy zoom that we're seeing from some of the competition, which, I'm kind of glad for because Apple seems to be concentrating more on portraits. Around two to two and a half times is where you get the optimal portrait performance. I think that's what Apple is aiming for. 


  • Image From Camera


Now, a new feature that's going to be coming to the Pro devices as well, which I personally am super excited about, is Apple ProRAW. So this will be the ability to save RAW images. I'm not going to go too technical here, but it's not the same as capturing normal RAW images. So if you are taking a shot on a professional camera, you will generally shoot RAW, which will give you a much bigger file size. But it will give you a lot more flexibility to edit in post. You can do lots more with that, rather than a small size JPEG. Now with Apple ProRAW, its actually going to apply a lot of computational photography, So all of the magic that happens when you take a shot on automation an iPhone, for example, where it's taking multiple shots and combining them into one, it's going to do that in RAW. So not only are you going to have great looking images straight away, it's going to give you a lot more scope to edit those images later on as well. This is going to be coming later on. It's not going to be coming straight away but it's something that I'm personally super pumped about. The Pro models of the iPhones also have a LiDAR scanner. This is basically going to measure depth. And it's going to be really useful for AR, but also for low light portrait photography. So it's going to be able to map the depth and be able to blur the background even if you do not have as much light. So this is something that once again I am super looking forward to testing. 


  • Video From Camera


We've also got some improvements to the video. The iPhones will be the first smartphones in the world to be able to record in4K HDR with Dolby Vision. So we're going to get a stunning video. I mean, you guys have heard me say many times before, that iPhones have the best video on any smartphone. And this is just going to get better. From what I can see, the iPhone 12s will also support this but at up to 30 frames a second, whereas the prom models will support this at up to 60 frames a second. And they'll also be the first smartphones where you're going to be able to edit 4K HDR Dolby Vision footage right on the smartphones, thanks to the A14 Bionic chip. 



Now let's move onto a new feature that's on all of the new iPhones. And that is MagSafe. And this looks very cool. So, Apple has now integrated magnets into the new iPhone. And this is going to mean a few things. Firstly, you will be able to have accessories that are just going to snap on, thanks to those magnets. But also wireless charging. When you're normally on a wireless charger, it's happened to me before as well. If you're not aligned it properly, sometimes you're not going to get that full charge. With the MagSafe technology, it's going to snap right into place to give you the optimal charge. And that onto charging. All of the phones do support Qi wireless charging up to 7.5 Watts regularly. But if you do use a MagSafe compatible device, where it's going to be able to snap on and get the optimal charge, you will be able to get up to 15 Watts fast wireless charging, which is great, and 20 Watt charging is supported across all of the iPhones. However, it's a bit of a catch here. The new iPhones do not come with a charger out of the box and neither do they come with EarPods out of the box. So these are now going to be done with and all you're going to get is the smartphone, some paperwork, as well as a lightning to USB type C cable. Now, we wish Apple had just gone with USB-C to USB-C and that would have made things much better. Apple is saying the reason for this is that most people already have chargers and earphones at home anyway. So by including them in the box, they just kind of stay there, and they go a lot towards carbon emissions. Apple is saying by removing these, they're going to be saving around 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually, which is around, is it 450,000 cars getting them off the roads, pretty much. So that's very impressive. If you ask me, personally, I don't mind. I have lots of chargers. I generally just use wireless charging anyway and I have wireless AirPods. So I don't really have to worry about this, but I know I don't speak for everybody. Definitely let me know in the comments below what you think about this. 


  • Storage


This is also going to mean that the boxes are going to be a lot smaller, a lot more compact. So, obviously, when it comes to transporting them across, you know, flights and things, they are going to take a lot less space. Now, space brings us nicely onto the storage. That was a good transition but anyway. Anyway, so the iPhone 12and the iPhone 12 Mini start at 64 gigabytes. You do have 128, 256 options as well at higher prices. The iPhone 12 Pro on the Pro Max does now get double the base storage at 128. So I'm definitely glad that they've got that because 64, especially with all of the potential 4K video that you're going to be recording will definitely not be enough. And then they do go all the way up to 512 gigabytes. 


  • Price


And finally, let's look at the price. So the iPhone 12 Mini does starts at the bottom, started at the bottom? No anyway, $699 or pounds, $799 or pound for the iPhone 12. And then you are looking at $1,000 for the iPhone 12 Pro and1,100 for the 12 Pro Max. And when can you get hold of the new iPhones? Well, the release is actually a little bit staggered. So, the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro will be coming out first. So you can pre-order them from the 16th of October and they will release on the 23rd of October. For the iPhone 12 Mini as well as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, they are actually going to be coming out in November. You can pre-order from the 6th of November and they will be releasing on the 13th of November. So you're going to have to wait a little while for those devices. And that is everything about the new iPhone 12 summarized as best as I can in one place.

Huawei has come out with some pretty solidly constructed phones since the Nexus 6P failure back in the day. The Mate 10 Pro I tested earlier this year passed with flying colors. It's time to see if this newest from Huawei, it's a triple camera P20 Pro flagship is a survivor. Let's get started.



Inside the box, we get the charging cable, headphones with a USB-C connector, and the international wall charger since this particular phone isn't coming to the USA. Initial impressions are that the phone is thick and solid feeling right out of the box, just how it should be. Okay, I'll start with the scratch test. Laying out my Mohs Hardness Scale. If you remember, this tells us what hardness level the screen is. Plastic would be a level 3, tempered glass is a level 6, and sapphire would be a level 8. Diamonds, of course, would be a 10. Huawei did include a plastic screen protector on this P20 Pro, which is nice of them, but the screen surface itself we find scratches at a level 6 and a deeper groove at a level 7. The P20 Pro is tempered glass. Huawei doesn't advertise having gorilla glass on their phone like they did last year on the P10.

The first thing I noticed about this phone besides the notch, is the earpiece. It's a little circular thing just ogling at you like some kind of the second eyeball right next to the 24-megapixel front-facing camera. Most earpieces are little slits for optimal sound transfer from the rectangular speaker underneath, but this guy is a circle. It will be interesting to see if the speaker is circular as well during the teardown. The speaker grill won't fall out though – which is good – not even with a razor blade. It's still sitting completely flush with the surface of the glass. 


The fingerprint scanner is down here at the bottom of the phone and is unscratchable. A big step up from the Mate 10 which we did end up scratching. You never know when you might end up in a freak razor blade fight accident. It's good to know your button will survive any damage. 


Speaking of buttons, Huawei added a little slit into the metal power button and dabbed some red paint in there. A kind of interesting and unique design choice. The volume rocker is also made from metal, and we can tell from the sound it's making that the sides are also metal. Up at the top of the phone, we are headphone jack-less. But Huawei did include an IR blaster so you can change the channel on your TV and stuff. Personally, I've never had a need for one of those, but I'm all about the features, the more the merrier so bring it on. We have a metal dual SIM card tray, but no expandable memory. No headphone jack on the bottom of the phone either, just a loudspeaker and USB-C charging port. 


For the back of the phone, this one is a Midnight Blue version, we get our first look at the triple camera set up. Super impressive by the way. And I'll say it again: the more features a phone has, the better. And the extra camera options on this guy is a good thing. The logos and Leica branding are all under the glass and won't be coming off from the outside, along with the dual-toned, dual-LED flash tucked safely under that back-glass panel. If we zoom in real tight on the camera lenses, down here at the bottom we have a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor covered with glass and a circular metal lip around the sides. Then we have a beastly 40-megapixel camera here in the center of the 3 lenses. And finally, a 3-time zoom telephoto lens up top. It's a pretty solid trio, but I think the ideal arrangement would be to toss out the monochrome sensor and add in a wide-angle lens like a Go-Pro fish eye back to capture a lot of things all at once. Those are the 3 types of lenses I carry for my professional camera. Monochrome has just never appealed to me. A quick side by side comparison with the dual camera set up on the iPhone 10. I am going to try to replace the cracked glass on the iPhone 10 with dry ice here in a few days. 


This is a 1080p 6.1-inch AMOLED display, meaning it lasted for about 20 seconds under my flame, but then never recovered. The flame left a white spot on the screen, even when the screen was off. This is where things go downhill. First of all, with the initial flex, it bends way more than I anticipated. Normally phones are much more solid than this. With that massive flex, the glass display is now shattered with multiple fractures. The damage is all contained in the glass...nothing transferred down to the AMOLED display underneath, but it is still rather unfortunate. I'll do a quick bend from the back of the phone before we go into the structural analysis. But with that second bend, no extra damage is done to the front or rear of the phone. It appears as if the cracks emanated from the level 7 pick marks left on the surface, meaning that without the damage I intentionally introduced to the surface of the glass, it might have survived the first bend. But an important thing to remember is that these impurities or scratches introduced to the surface of the glass can also occur in real life in your pocket or with minor drops, dents, and dings. And even more interesting to note, is that I've tested over 100 different phones now over the past few years, and most of them don't shatter during the bend test, even with the level 6 and 7 scratches in the glass. So, it's kind of safe to say that this Huawei P20 Pro is just weaker in general. 


My theory is that Huawei didn't advertise corning gorilla glass on this particular phone, and with the vast majority of other phones that I test, some form of gorilla glass is installed. Based on the sample size of tested phones on my channel, corning holds up better than generic cell phone glass, even after the damage has been introduced. The Huawei P20 Pro still functions though, so it's not a catastrophic failure. I don't think that it deserves a spot on my Shelf of Shame, but it still didn't exactly pass. I need a new category for phones that survive...but barely. What should we call it? Remember, a case and a screen protector go a long way to making your device last longer. So, a few days ago we saw the first-ever look at the Galaxy S21 Ultra with that huge camera design that wraparounds the edges of the phone. The Galaxy S21 also features a similar design albeit the camera module is significantly smaller compared to the Ultra. But Onleaks didn't reveal what the middle of the road Galaxy S21+ is going to look like but that changes today as MySmartPrice has published the official card renders of the S21 Plus. 



And surprisingly it looks identical to the Galaxy S21. The same triple camera design with flash outside the module, a flat display upfront with a punch-hole camera, and razer thin bezels. These diagrams seem to leak straight from a designer's computer program but thankfully we have our friendly neighborhood Ice Universe making some good-looking renders to depict how it's going to look in real life. And yes, it does look pretty. 


The only difference between the S21 and S21+ aesthetically is that the Plus variant will have thinner bezels and it's bigger in size. 6.7" to be exact compared to 6.2" on the S21. The S21 Ultra has a display of 6.9" Compared to the S20 variants, all the S21 models will be wider and shorter. Only the S21 Plus is seeing a battery upgrade 4800mAh compared to 4500mAh on the S20 Plus, the S21 and Ultra have the same battery capacity as their predecessors. 


Also, we have the color variants of the S21 family. Ross Young claims that these colors are 100% accurate and will be surely seen on the Galaxy S21 lineup. Those are Gray, Pink, Violet, and White for the S21, black and silver for the S21 Plus, and Black, Silver, and Violet for the S21 Ultra. Looking forward to that violet color for the S21 Ultra which in all way is going to be better than the boring grey and black on this year's S20 Ultra. He also says that handsets will be manufactured in South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Brazil. 


Nothing new here as it’s already known that these are the countries where Samsung phones are made. Samsung will launch the S21 earlier this time in January to take advantage of Huawei's absence and counter the late arrival of the iPhone 12 lineup. The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Z Fold 2, and the iPhone 11 and 12 Pro have an Ultrawideband chip that lets one phone know where another device is using the same tech which can be used for fast file transfer. But the implication of this chip goes way beyond that. 


In a new press release, Samsung said that they want to make it as big as Bluetooth. In the future, Samsung will also be debuting a new Digital Key solution that uses UWB to unlock compatible vehicles in place of a traditional key. Also, Xiaomi has posted its own take on UWB showing a more intuitive way to control your smart devices around the household such as controlling smart light, smart display, fan, and smart TV, by simply pointing a phone at the devices. Also, the phone’s UI automatically switches between various device control menus as you point the phone at different gadgets, no need to swipe it manually. 


Finally, the phone can also unlock the door as it detects the phone nearby. Pretty cool, Samsung sees UWB as a game-changer for the future, and judging from Xiaomi's video, tech like this could make a smart home feel completely seamless, but I think we're still years away before it’s actually viable. Today we're going to durability test the iPhone 12 Pro and its ceramic shield covered front screen. You might have noticed that the box is a little bit smaller this year. You know how Apple has slowly been removing things with each new product launch. 



First was the headphone jack, then the HDMI on their laptops, and now it's the charging brick itself that's gone. It's always exciting to find out what's going to disappear next. Apple definitely keeps you on your toes. Honestly, though, it's probably a good thing. Their 5-watt inbox charger was the slowest charger of any phone anywhere. And now there's no reason not to upgrade to the faster charging Anker Nano, which costs less while still charging three times faster...all while keeping the same size as the old brick. 


Now iPhone users will get to experience the fast charging that Androids have had for years. I'll leave a link down in the video description that will give you a 10% discount off the Anker Nano...because you know, if Apple isn't going to hook you up, Anker for sure will. Now it's time for the durability test.

 

Iphone 12 Pro

Let's get started. Personally, I think it's a bit sus that Apple got rid of the free inbox charger at the exact same time they came out with a new type of magnetic charging...which conveniently costs $40, by the way. I'm sure it's all just a coincidence though. Just like how the headphone jack disappeared at the same time the wireless air pods came out. You know, totally normal behavior. You can see that inside the magnetic circular attachment is a group of coiled wires that transfer power to the other set of coiled wires inside of the phone. We'll have to see what those look like for realsies when we open them up for the teardown video, but while we're here on the outside we can see where the magnets are located with some metal shavings. The magnets form a perfect circle around the outside of the copper coils. Thumbs up for that. I think it's kind of cool, even if you aren't able to keep your credit card and phone in the same pocket anymore.


New Iphone 12 Pro

It's probably a good idea in general though to keep metal shavings away from your phone. If you remember, the earpiece and loudspeaker are also both made with magnets, so if any small shavings get sucked up inside of the phone, we can tear the speakers to shreds. I'm sure the ip68   waterproofing will help keep the dust and shavings out. But still, it's better safe than sorry. Speaking of being safe rather than sorry, Apple has stepped up their phone design quite a bit this year with a lot of focus on the screen. Apple says their new ceramic shield is a step beyond the glass. But it's as important to listen closely to their carefully structured buzzword filled sentences. Apple said they've included nano-ceramic crystals within the glass matrix to dramatically improve toughness. And yeah, they might have found a new way of forming glass to make it tougher, but those new crystals are still within a glass matrix, which means it's still glassed no matter how many other words they add to the sentence. And if the glass is still glass...you know the rest. 



Apple doesn't mention much about scratch resistance, just drop protection and toughness. They also use the phrase “along with our new design it makes the iPhone tougher than ever.” So, it's not just the new glass. I think a large part of that four times more drop resistance comes from the design, with the glass totally flush sitting just inside the surface of the frame. A piece of glass has 6 sides: front, back, and all 4 edges. And with 5 of those 6 sides protected by this phone frame in a way that most smartphones are not built, it really does make this iPhone 12 Pro more shatter-resistant. So, I do believe Apple's claim about the glass being 4 times tougher, but I think the protective design has more to do with it than the buzzwords do. I've scratched hundreds and hundreds of phones in this exact same way, and Apple's ceramic shield is still scratching at a level 6, with deeper grooves at a level 7. It might just be my imagination, but it does look like the level 6 scratches are a tad fainter, but they are definitely still there. The ceramic shield is not the product that will bring us to the next level of Mohs hardness. 


One thing that can always be certain though, is that as Apple removes things from the box, the high price will always remain the same. The only way to really keep your screen scratch-free and resale value high is with a screen protector. I've installed thousands of screen protectors from my pre-YouTube phone repair days, and it only takes a few seconds. The biggest obstacle is the dust underneath the glass. But there's an alcohol wipe and a dust sticker in the box to help mitigate that. The screen protector is held in place by a thin layer of nano adhesive so there's no residue left on the glass when it's ever removed. And since the iPhone 12 Pro display is totally flat, the precision-cut screen protector makes it look like it was meant to be there. Just like you wear safety glasses to protect your eyes and a mask to protect your lungs, a screen protector is a cheap way to avoid a lot of future regrets. 


Plus, these aren't your normal plastic rubbery screen protectors either. It's an additional layer of protective tempered glass. And as we know, glass is glass, and glass can...it's much easier to replace a $10 screen protector than it is to replace a $270 display. Now if I'm being totally honest, I do have to say that the iPhone 12 Pro is one of the cleanest looking and best feeling phones that I've held in a really long time. And the frame is surprisingly hard to scratch. The sides of the iPhone 12 Pro are made from stainless steel, and since my razor blade is also made from stainless steel, they're having a hard time damaging each other. The paint is obviously still going to scratch off. Most phones are usually made from softer aluminum. Aluminum is like a 3 or 4 on the Mohs scale. So, this stainless steel at Mohs 5 is quite a bit more resilient It's just the paint that's not.



The silver-colored version of the iPhone is going to hide this kind of damage the best. There is no expandable memory of course. There never was. The magnets on the back can be a handy SIM card removal tool holder. And then of course at the bottom, we still have our lightning port. I'm also a big fan of the textured glass back here. You can hear the difference my razor blade makes when it goes from the rough frosted texture to the smooth glass on the Apple logo. The textured glass has the ability to act like sandpaper to other objects. Since glass is a very hard material, softer objects like this penny will leave marks behind on the glass. But the marks aren't permanent. It's just dust caught on the rough surface and can be rubbed away. 


The top camera bump is relatively reasonable this year when compared to Samsung's monstrosities. The bottom lens is a 12-megapixel 2x optical zoom telephoto. Then we have the 12-megapixel ultrawide in the center. And the main 12-megapixel sensor up top. And each camera lens is again covered with its own sapphire crystal lens cover. It's still getting marks levels 6 and 7, but you already know how I feel about that. The screen of the iPhone 12 Pro is a 6.1-inch super retina XDR display, meaning it's OLED. And has a slightly higher resolution than 1080p. A cool thing though is that even after 30 seconds from the heat of my lighter, the pixels on the OLED are still unfazed with zero damage. Other phones start to turn white and not recover. 


Now I'm no materials expert, but ceramic is a slower conductor of heat than glass is, meaning that the heat doesn't transfer through it as easy. So, it is possible that Apple's new screen material is keeping the heat away from the pixels. This doesn't mean quite a whole lot as far as lighters go, but it does add a little validity to the new ceramic crystal material claim that Apple is making. The oleophobic coating is definitely evaporated though, so don't try the burn test on your own phone. What about the bend test? I mean, it's probably easy to guess, but with the more solid stainless-steel frame and recessed glass on both sides keeping the box rigid, the iPhone 12 Pro is a non-flexing tank of a cell phone and I'm impressed. No bends, kinks, or cracks of any kind in the frame. 


Apple is, and always has been, premium and expensive, but at least lately the materials have started to match the price tag a bit better. I used my last phone for over 3 years, and I've only had my current phone for about a year, so I'm not ready to upgrade just yet. Maybe someday I'll try out the iPhone again, but I'll wait until next year's iPhone 13 Pro Max Ultra Pro 6G no screen edition before I make up my mind.
